19th century French giltwood sofa
£450
A very attractive Louis XVI canapé with oval back in original gilt finish. This has elegant fluted, tapered legs with rosette and acanthus leaf detail at the top, a cartouche at the top of the frame and armrest pads.
The very old fabric features a couple in a pastoral scene surrounded by flowers and foliage. So it’s characterful and very much in keeping with the style of this era, but it’s badly faded and stained, so could be removed for reupholstery.
The stud detail is unusual, because some of the old the studs are copper rather than brass, so have weathered to a verdigris finish (there are later replacements to some of the stud work).
The frame is sturdy with just a few signs of historic woodworm, and some wear to the gilt finish.
