This 19th century oil on canvas is an extremely accomplished still life of fruit, with a plant and jug, set against an atmospheric, textured dark background. The relief on the jug is very well executed, and the attention to detail is outstanding. (Tiny wasp on the edge of the bowl!) There is no signature on the painting, but the back is stamped with the prestigious 'ESK', which was the official stamp for 'Examined School of South Kensington', the art school which preceded the Royal College of Art.
