Early Victorian housekeeper’s cupboard

This tall, imposing cupboard has shelving with glazed pair of doors above over drawers below. It’s a rare find, because it is in the original finish – very worn and crackled now, which gives it immense character – and also has the original glass in the doors to the upper section. We’ve included a detail image of the glass to try to show the textured, ripple effect of the old glass. The lower section consists of two short drawers over two long, sitting on sturdy bun feet, with curved corners to the frame and corresponding curved corners to the breakfront section, which complement the curved tops to the glass doors above. The drawers have the original brass escutcheons (no keys though) and white porcelain handles, some of which have slight chips. The shelved interior of the glazed section has been repainted in an off-white, which gives a good contrast with the worn reddish plum colour of the original finish on the exterior.
